Subliminal Stimuli presents... 26 MIXES FOR FREE

15 years ago today, renowned electronic artist and probably Subliminal Stimuli's biggest inspiration, Aphex Twin, released a collection of (re)mixes to the public. It was a half-heartedly thrown together compilation of strange sounds, most of which, throughout the '90's, could be found only as easter eggs on the B-sides of various obscure EPs and remix albums around the world. This compilation was called simply 26 Mixes For Cash.

The concept behind this compilation is that there is no concept. From the seemingly random order of the tracks, to the bland grey wash revealing a complete lack of artistic inclination, to the title, honest, tactless, and perfectly centered on the cover in Georgia font. It's as if the packaging was designed by Bartleby the Scrivener.

Richard David James, the man behind the moniker, did for so-called "intelligent dance music" what Subliminal Stimuli has done for dubstep: murder it and find a million fun ways to animate its corpse.

That's the idea behind their upcoming homage album, 26 Mixes For Free.

The tracklist:

Remixes I wish were on the compilation:

Take The Night - Love Me In The Dark
Subliminal Stimuli - Nothing Lasts Forever (Remastered)
Mutrix - Come Alive
CJ6.5 - Wtfdyjfstmylb?
SubNetix - Tha Higha Power
AnonyWolf - Disco Dancer
Aphex Twin - On

A handful of these tracks have been previously released on Remixes 1, while others, like Monster Killer and Sad Eyes, have been released on Soundcloud. By the looks of it, at least half of these tracks are previously unreleased. I personally am excited to hear the new and improved remix of Skrillex's brostep classic, "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites." There are a handful of previously released tracks that I really enjoyed which, sadly, have been excluded from the album. Nevertheless, those nostalgic for the days of dubstep and underground noise, will praise this as the true Aphex of EDM compilations.

More details and commentary will be given as soon as the album is officially released; until then here's a handful of samples:
